SR-22 Insurance
If you have a less than perfect driving record you may need Illinois SR22 insurance. SR22 is a form required by many state Department of Motor Vehicles that provides proof of state-mandated liability insurance. Once the automobile insurance with SR22 is purchased the Illinois SR22 is filed by the insurance company with the Secretary of State on behalf of the motorist. This filing allows a suspended driver’s license to be reinstated.
SR22 insurance can be required of drivers for a variety of reasons, including:
- License suspension for not driving safely.
- Driving without auto insurance.
- Reckless driving.
- Driving under the influence (DUI).
- Three moving violations within 12 months.
- Unsatisfied judgment suspensions.
Insurance policy lapses will invalidate the SR-22 insurance so it is important to keep the insurance in force. Insurance companies must notify the Secretary of State if a policy lapses, is cancelled for non-payment or terminated for any reason. Once the Secretary of State receives notification that the insurance policy is no longer in force they will suspend the drivers license again until the policy is either reinstated or a new SR22 filing is received. It’s a good idea to renew insurance early because state law in Illinois requires insurance companies to notify the Secretary of State if the renewal is not received 15 days before the insurance expires. That’s when the state will begin the suspension process.
Drivers normally have to maintain SR22 insurance for thirty six months. Most states require drivers to continue to have SR22 insurance if they move to a different state, with the minimum liability limits required by the new state.
The minimum liability requirement in Illinois is $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury; $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for uninsured motorist coverage and $20,000 for property damage.
